I love building spaces: architecture, furniture, all of it, probably more than fashion. The development procedure is more tactile. It's about space and form and it's something you can share with other people.

Donna Karan's quote shows that she understands the importance of Space and I am sure that attitude has helped her with her success.
Our surroundings show how organized or disorganized we are – usually. I’ll admit to times when people could walk into my office while I am up-to-my-neck in multi-tasking and think that a tornado had come through. But if they asked me to get a particular book or bill or information, I knew exactly where it was. Still – I had wished that my room had reflected what was in my mind, and that was one of the things I worked on in myself. Now there is (usually) space on the floor to walk, appropriate files in file cabinets, and supplies easily accessible.
When working on a project, Space can be looked at from several viewpoints. Sometimes, it can be the focus of the project, as deciding that it is time to clear out the garage. Most of the time, it is just the area that we are in while we are focused on something else. It also can be the "it factor" which becomes crucial to the success of an Action. For example, if you were meeting with someone who has knowledge about some work you are doing, you may get more information by taking her to lunch at a French restaurant, rather than at a hamburger joint.
How we manage our Space is determined by four factors:
- The Purpose of the Space
- Efficiency
- Aesthetics
- The Dimensions of the Space
These are the points you want to keep in mind as you go through your three phases of Space analysis. More of this is discussed in the Applying the STARS System section.
- At the Beginning of a Project.
At the beginning of your project the notes you make on The STARS System Design Overview Sheet This file requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can get from the Third Party Downloads panel at your left. will be fairly basic. If you are working on a computer project, under the Space column, it will probably list "Office" all the way down the column. But this will start to change as you interact with your Space as you work.
- During tasks.
As you start to work on your project and are assigning work on The STARS System Stage Task ListThis file requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can get from the Third Party Downloads panel at your left., you will want to analyze your Space according to the four factors listed above. You may be working in a bleak environment, and bringing in fresh flowers to your desk once a week, may help with your mental attitude towards the work. Or maybe the filing system is just not set up properly for the type of project you are working on. Changing this could bring about a more efficient way of working. By understanding your relationship to Space, your Work and Spirit will improve.
- At the end of a Stage or Project.
By looking how Space impacted a project, you can make notes as to what worked and what didn't work on The STARS System Stage and Project Evaluation SheetThis file requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, which you can get from the Third Party Downloads panel at your left.. Perhaps your next project might even evolve around the Space itself.
